Bottle Gentian, Gentiana andrewsii

Fascinating wildflower known for its closed tubular blue flowers that appear late in fall all the way into frost; flowers do not open and seem to be forever in bud. Bottle gentian grows in part shade in wet, rocky, or woodland areas. Pollinated by bumblebees (who muscle into a tiny hole in the top), the closed flowers form resistance to pest and disease. Trailing plant habit helps plant naturalize if left undisturbed. 50 seeds $2.50, 1/8 oz. $12/50.
