Bottlebrush grass, Elymus hystrix, is a native woodland perennial grass. The name hystrix, comes from the Greek word for “hedgehog.” Bottlebrush is a cool season grass, meaning it grows actively during the cool spring and fall seasons and more slowly in summer. Will readily self-seed in the garden. Deer-resistant and adaptable to a wide variety of soils, including heavy clay. Stabilizes soil. Host plant to several moths and butterflies.
